A Tribute to Carla Talley: She Saw Me as I Am
Some people enter our lives and help us become someone new. Others give us something even more precious: they see and value the person who was already there.
Carla Talley was that person for me.
I had the privilege of knowing Carla for about three years. Although our time together was far too short, the impact she made on my life will remain with me forever. During those years, she became not only my mentor but also my friend. Our relationship was built on trust, care, and a genuine connection.
Carla saw me as I truly am—not simply for what I had accomplished, what I could offer, or who others expected me to be. She recognized something deeper within me. Through her encouragement and trust, she helped me recognize it too.
When Carla became ill, she asked me to take over the women’s accountability group. She trusted me to lead something that mattered deeply to her. At the time, she saw abilities in me that I had not yet learned to see in myself.
Her trust was a gift. By giving me the opportunity to lead, Carla helped me understand that I was capable, that my voice mattered, and that I had something valuable to offer other women. She did not simply tell me that I had worth. She opened a door and gave me the space to discover it for myself.
That is one of the greatest things a mentor and friend can do. Carla did not try to make me into someone else. She helped me become more fully who I already was. She saw my potential, made room for it, and trusted me enough to let it grow.
Taking over the group was more than accepting a responsibility. It was accepting the belief Carla had placed in me. Every time I step forward to lead, support another woman, or help someone recognize her own value, I carry a part of Carla’s influence with me.
Her passing leaves an absence that words cannot fill. Yet what she gave me remains. Her trust continues to shape how I see myself, and her example reminds me how powerful it is to truly see another person.
Carla’s Christian faith was an important part of who she was. She lived out that faith through the way she cared for others, offered encouragement, and believed in the women around her. Her life reflected compassion, service, and grace. Although I grieve her passing, I find comfort in believing that she is now at peace in the presence of God.
Carla, thank you for seeing me as I am. Thank you for being my mentor and my friend. Thank you for opening the door, trusting me to lead, and helping me recognize my worth.
I hope to honor you by holding that door open for other women and helping them see the worth within themselves. Your belief in me changed my life. I will carry that gift, our friendship, your faith-filled example, and your memory with me always.
